Sources of Indigenous Fijian ‘law’: village mores versus town-based criminal laws

The aim of this article is to reflect on oral history interview data provided by an ex-soccer star who played for Fiji and in what now the Premier League, reconcile his criminal past (according town-based laws) with current village assistant headman status. compares contrasts two sources law – customary Indigenous traditions rights responsibilities laws, which have their origins British colonial-era laws are administered enforced neoliberal Bainimarama government. Because soccer star’s jewellery store robberies were Indian-owned stores, it difficult them penetrate into world ‘village-space’, other than as a repressed spectre, since non-Indigenous people cannot live villages. For Fijians, ‘town-space’ place employment, education, venturing out partying, beyond gaze elders, whereas ‘village-space’ ordered space home community. ‘Quasi-space’ here defined physically town, but when only ones present, or clear majority, some aspects understandings can dominate that at least certain time periods variable intensity.
